Rank in ChatGPT when answers are crowded: it names five brands per answer, and most businesses still miss the list

Referenced's November 2 data: ChatGPT named the business in 28% of 724 buyer answers and named others in 68%, with about five brands per answer. What that means if you want to rank in ChatGPT.

If you want to rank in ChatGPT, the list it gives is longer than it looks, and your name is still usually missing from it. On November 2, Referenced, a tool that tracks how brands show up in AI answers, published results from 2,172 answers to buyer questions for 14 small and mid-sized businesses, collected from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews between October 1 and 31. ChatGPT named the business being asked about in 28% of its 724 answers and named other companies instead in 68%, with an average of 5.1 brands per answer.

What else the numbers showed

ChatGPT cited about 11 links per answer, yet across the three engines only 1.5% to 3% of cited links pointed to the business's own website. ChatGPT linked to that site in 17% of answers. When all three engines answered the same question on the same day, all three named the business only 10% of the time, and on 64% of questions none of them did. Most links went to other companies' sites, and Facebook appeared among the sources for all 14 businesses.

Referenced sells AI visibility tracking, and 14 businesses is a small sample. A separate October 21 scan by Howseen of 359 brands, mostly French small and mid-sized firms, found 11.3% were named at least once in ChatGPT. Read both as a direction, not a forecast for your category. Last week we looked at why ChatGPT rarely names brands it does not already recall; crowded answers make that gap easier to see.

What we check first when ChatGPT names five others

  • Ask ChatGPT the buyer questions you want to win, and list every brand it names in your place.
  • Read the pages it cites beside those names, and note which mention you and which leave you out.
  • Keep directory, map and review listings current, since cited links point there far more than to your own site.
  • Check more than one AI engine before you judge a result, since they rarely agree.

Map listings now carry their own AI layer: our sister agency CheapAITraffic covers Google's free AI messaging agent for Business Profiles, and BuyAISearch explains why opting out of AI training is a separate call from showing up in AI answers.
