Rank in ChatGPT before it searches: brands it rarely names on its own stay low even on cited pages

Graphite's comparison-prompt data, reported by Search Engine Journal on October 26, shows brands ChatGPT rarely names without search stay low when it searches, even when cited pages mention them. What that means if you want to rank in ChatGPT.

If you want to rank in ChatGPT, being on the pages it cites may not be enough. Search Engine Journal reported on October 26 on an October 16 analysis by Graphite, a growth agency that sells AEO services: in comparison prompts asked of logged-out ChatGPT, brands it rarely named without search were also rarely named when it did search. Among brands substantially mentioned on at least 15% of the cited pages, median visibility with search was 11% when ChatGPT named them in under a quarter of its no-search answers.

What else the data showed

Graphite counted about 957,000 of ChatGPT's background searches from 22,953 comparison prompts that named no brand. 59.6% of those searches still contained a brand name, and 22.7% used a site: operator to search one website. Separately, Parse looked at ChatGPT Search answers from September 29 to October 6 and found that when ChatGPT looked up the site of a brand it named, that site was cited 85.4% of the time, against 45.7% for brands named in the same answers without a lookup. Both are associations from tracked prompts, not proof of cause, and SEJ notes the Graphite write-up does not control for how well known each brand already was.

Graphite also estimates two to five months between a model's knowledge cutoff and its release, so new pages take time to reach what a model knows. Treat that as a floor, not a schedule.

What we check first to get your brand into ChatGPT

  • Ask the same comparison prompts with search off and with search on, and keep the two results apart.
  • Check whether ChatGPT puts your brand name into its own background searches when the prompt does not name you.
  • Make sure the pages a site: lookup would land on answer the buyer's need in plain words, with current pricing and specs.
  • Confirm AI crawlers are not blocked by a firewall or CDN rule you forgot about.

Mentions and citations are only half the picture. Our sister agency BuyAISearch ranked the options as three new studies question whether AI search optimization pays back, and CheapAITraffic explains why your own analytics come before any paid fix.
